Elkins High School students returned Wednesday for the first day of school, and were quick to  voice their feelings about what the school year has in store for them. Teachers and students alike shared emotions about the transition from summer back into classes.

“I’m excited to be back, this year I feel like that this year there’s going to be a different level of energy and I feel that after all the uncertainty people are ready to be and ready to see their friends again”, said Mr. Blake. “I thought it went pretty smooth but there was definitely anxiety from the younger kids.”

“Hopefully this year is more normal compared to the last two,” said Mr. Hott.

A few seniors said they were excited for their high school lasts–starting off the last first day of school. “It’s sad to think of it as the last first day of school with my friends, but I’m really excited for senior year in general,” Kiley Edwards explained.

Another senior, Joslyn also described the experience as bittersweet.  “I don’t want to think of it as my last last day of school.” Joslyn said. “It’s sad to think that I’ll be gone in like 8 months from now and I’m going to be leaving. It makes me somewhat emotional to think about.”

While a majority expressed their displeasure with waking up as early as they did this morning, numerous students shared their enthusiasm for the milestones and activities ahead. “I’m excited to watch my friends graduate,” Caleb said. “They’re going to be great young men and women,” he added.

“It was great, I enjoyed it,” said senior Cory.

“I’m really excited for another great cheer season, an injury set me back for a good portion of my last season so I’m definitely ready for another go,” junior Braelynn commented.

Many other athletes explained what they’re looking forward to this year. “What I’m most excited for this year is the new track. The new athletic complex is going to be a game changer for just about everyone in sports,” senior Samantha explain. “I’m really glad I get to be a part of it, and finally have some home meets.”

Students will continue to get into the flow of their classes in the weeks to follow, but have largely voiced their optimism about what’s to come.
