For a while now, the residents and visitors of Elkins have longed for a purpose-built multi-use trail system to be available for more recreational activities such as mountain biking, hiking, and running. Thanks to Elkins Area Shared Trails (EAST), there is now a project for the creation of a brand new trail being developed by the hard-working group.

“The group’s membership was inspired to take action in response to growing frustration at the limited recreation opportunities in the area,” says Jessica Sutton, the Elkins City Clerk and founding member of the EAST group.

EAST is currently planning trail systems on three specific properties, which total to 236 acres. Develop plans include designing up to 10 miles of bike-optimized trails with a starting date planned for the year February 2023. The expanded trails continue to benefit those who ride, hike, run, and those who are strong drivers of the local economic growth.

Due to the Snowshoe Highlands being designated a IMBA Silver Level Ride Center in 2019, the visitation rate spiked rapidly, which invited more people to move. The recreational activities are a big factor in helping people with deciding where to live.

“All of the EAST partners are excited to see the results of this planning process,” says Sutton. “With support from the community and various organizations, the future of trail development in the Elkins area looks bright.”
