[Movie Review] “Avatar”: An Undeserving Masterpiece

Garret Goff, Reporter

Since the second installment in the Avatar universe has been released, we are going to look back at the original and give our opinions on the old classic. Avatar takes place on the fictional planet of Pandora, home of the Na’vi. Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington, a paralyzed soldier from a dying earth, has been sent on a mission to collect resources from the planet. But during the mission, he falls in love with a Na’vi and must fight for the survival of her home planet.

In my opinion, it’s okay. The movie isn’t super good, but it is better than most of the other movies that came out then such as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The movie is visually stunning, but it lacks twists and turns. I don’t think it deserves its place as the highest grossing movie.

Additionally there are issues with the main character: Jake Sully. Not only is he not my favorite character to come from the movie, but also his character suffers from bad writing that leads to bad character development. He quite literally doomed humanity just for an alien girl, granted it was also for the survival of a big tree and that is all, but the end fight that he leads is cool so i’ll give him props for that.

Despite that, I am excited for Avatar: Way of the Water since it is the next installment of the series and it has already earned a staggering $1.17 billion dollars. I expect it to be a good movie since it follows up on Jake’s story and it shows his kids in the movie. Before you go and see the new Avatar make sure to watch the first one, and don’t go in expecting a masterpiece.
