Tiger Times reporter, Kelsey Tincher, had the opportunity to interview our new superintendent Dr. Shawn Dilly. Here are the highlights of their conversation.
Q: We have noticed that you have spent over twenty-one years working in education in the United States, so can you tell us how that has helped your journey to becoming superintendent?
A: Like many folks, it’s about trying to figure out what we want to do when we grow up, and, ultimately, I began as an art teacher. I eventually stopped teaching and began moving forward to an opportunity outside of teaching but, I came back several years later to teach at Tucker County High School as a full-time art teacher. I then moved through various principal positions, working my way up to a district position. I became a superintendent in Mineral County Schools for a while and moved to Jefferson County. After working overseas, I returned home to work where we raised my children. I plan to use my experiences to better things happening in Randolph County Schools.
Q: What are your plans for this school year?
A: There are quite a few plans but, predominately our biggest issue is our financial state is deteriorating due to lack of enrollment. So, having to think of how to reorganize our funds to prevent taking opportunities away from the students. There are three primary areas I am going to be working with this year, the main one being communication. Our students are important, hence why I came to speak with you today, and keeping them informed on things not only in school but outside of school is important as well.
