On December 14th, EHS Journalism will be hosting a craft show. The craft show will also include a silent auction and bake sale. The event is being run by Kelsey Tincher, a senior EHS Journalist. A variety of items will be sold during the sale, a large majority being handmade by the community.
“There will be a variety of items sold, some of these include car diffusers, wreaths, seasonal primitives, Christmas ornaments, hand painted items, crochet items, freeze dried candy, jewelry, and much more.” Tincher says.
This will be EHS Journalism’s second time hosting a fundraising event. The Journalism class hosted its first craft show last school year. Along with planning fundraisers, Journalism also sells subscriptions for their publications. Tincher states that there are plans in the making for future fundraisers.
“The Journalism class didn’t start fundraising until last year. In this time we have gotten the chance to plan two craft shows as well as sell subscriptions for our publication. Our fundraising is just beginning however we have many plans in the making.” Tincher says.
Funds raised from the craft show are used to help students attend the National High School Journalism Convention. The convention is the nation’s largest gathering of scholastic journalists, advisers, and journalism teachers. The convention includes many varying workshops which can be attended by students. The convention also offers on site critiquing and mentorship from experienced journalists. Awards and recognition are also presented at the event. Funds from the craft show will also go towards EHS Journalism’s newspaper publications. The class’s goal is to have 8 editions published by the end of the year.
“For the past two years we have been able to take our students on trips to attend the National High School Journalism Convention; however, these trips can get pretty pricey. Our fundraiser helps us to be able to cut down the cost and give more students the opportunity to experience this. We are also raising money to fund our print newspaper. Our goal this year is to be able to print 8 editions and these fundraisers help us do so.” Tincher says.
The decision to do a craft show was inspired by a few things. One being that Journalism wanted the community to be included in a fundraiser. The craft show gives individuals the opportunity to sell their handmade goods and art. The previous craft show resulted in positive results, making it a prime candidate to repeat.
“We came to the decision to do a craft show last school year and determined it would be a good idea to have it again. When brainstorming ideas for fundraising we knew that we wanted to do something that incorporated the community and everyone’s talents” Said Tincher.
