The West Virginia Young Writers competition that has been held yearly since 1984 the winner of each school will advance to the state competition in Charleston.
Junior, Ava Hymes, won the county competition in 2024.
“Going to young writers was really cool to see these different students who had the same passions as me. It was also just a fun time to meet some authors from the state. It was like a reward for the hard work I put into my story.” Ava Hymes said.
The West Virginia Young Writers competition will accept submissions from grades one to twelve with a word count going up every grade from 300 to 1,200 words. All submissions must have a cover sheet and be submitted by February 10, 2025. Students should speak with their English teacher if they are interested in participating.
Mr. Carroll, the county coordinator of the West Virginia Young Writers competition said, “The Young Writer’s competition is designed to celebrate student writing I encourage all students to take advantage of this opportunity.”
The winners will be notified in March but announced to the public on Young Writers Day May 2, 2025, and the announcement will be held at the University of Charleston. Winners will receive a certificate and can participate in a workshop with published writers, as well as a monetary reward for first, second, and third place.
