As many of you may know the digital media team runs our Tiger Times broadcast. Did you know that it used to be called the Bengal Broadcast? This broadcast has been running since early 2024 with the team and process evolving over time. The beginning of production began sometime around February of 2024 and our process was not the greatest.
Our process was very messy and needlessly complicated. To begin with, our way of filming had been hard for most of the class to work around. We had run an HDMI from our camera into a very low quality laptop which was running OBS (a recording and streaming software). We had used this method up until the beginning of 2025 when we made the process much simpler by using just the camera to record. The reason for this terribly complicated start was because it was new to all of us, including the teacher. Nobody had recorded a broadcast before this, and the setup we initially had was intended to simulate the “Live” aspect of filming a news broadcast.
With this new found power of using a camera correctly, we proceeded into the latter half of 2024 where the production had fallen into the hands of the students and the name had switched to The Tiger Times. Our jobs ranged from being a news anchor, the director, or even editing the broadcast. The makeshift studio we made had evolved to have new backdrops and better microphones, although they wouldn’t be properly used until the next year.
Once the next school year had begun a new roster of staff had appeared and nearly all of the previous staff had either graduated or left to pursue other classes. This left very little room for most but allowed for the previous staff to take over and change. We changed nearly the whole process to make it more relaxed and streamlined to ensure that the creativity and productivity of our class flowed flawlessly together to bring the creation of something great.
Our broadcast had begun to look better with each one we do something different would stand out and a change would be made in order to better or correct that thing. For example, previously we had used only one light for the entire broadcast. Admittedly, it looked terrible, and for the time being we couldn’t get newer cables to power the other lights we had, but now we have 3 lights and even got color gels to change the color of the lights. We also now have stronger computers to edit and manage files on where before we only had one laptop that was shared between both journalism, for our newspaper, and digital media.
Our process has grown significantly and at this point and although we may have a smaller team for the broadcast, we still make great videos with a great team. The head staff in digital media have also been collecting bloopers throughout the years, and what better way to use them than a full blooper reel.
Lookout for our next broadcast which should be releasing sometime next week, and thank you for watching.
