Elkins High School SAT scores are good, but they’re not great, being placed at 63rd out of 115 schools in the state. Our SAT scores clearly show that we have room to improve and do better so that teachers and students can reach their full potential. While our latest did not meet standards, maybe this year will.
There are four different standards that you can meet, one of which you don’t meet standards. Next, it partially meets standards, meets standards, and exceeds standards.
Most students didn’t succeed, and even fewer students partially met standards in mathematics. In Reading subjects, 36.57% of students meet standards, 29.14% of students do not meet standards. In science, only 7.43% of students meet standards.
For the entire state of WV, only 32.98% of students do not meet standards in mathematics. Only 20.07% of students exceed standards. In reading, only 18.31% of students exceed standards, and only 24.33% of students don’t meet standards. In science, only 32.29% of students don’t meet standards, and only 10.37% of students exceed standards.

Despite the scores, teachers want to highlight the hard work and dedication of the students. Preparing for the SAT is a challenging process; hopefully, teachers will give the students more help to improve their skills.
Susan McCauley, Technology Integration Specialist/Secondary Curriculum Coordinator/Technology Coordinator, shared some reasons as to why she believes Elkins High School has worse SAT scores than the majority of the schools in the area and state.
“I’m not sure many students care or feel they need the SAT in the state of West Virginia,” McCauley said.
Elkins High school is now doing Khan Academy to improve students’ SAT skills. “9th and 10th graders will take the PSAT to help prepare them for the SAT,” McCauley said.
With the PSAT practices and Khan Academy being our main help with student improvement, teachers and principals can only hope that the students will actually try to improve their skills on their own.
