The Elkins High School band takes the field during a pep rally on September 9, 2022.

It has been nearly two years since the Elkins High School Tigers football team has had a field to call their own. For the past two years they have practiced on the school’s baseball field and have only had one home game. In 2021, Wimer Stadium, the former field for the Tigers, was permanently shut down for games and practice.

In 2021, new bleachers were constructed, not in South Elkins like Wimer Stadium was, but right outside Elkins High School. The team didn’t win their first home game that year, but it was the beginning of something else. After the 2021 season, construction on a new turf field began and it has now been completed. The first event on the new field saw both the boys and the girls soccer teams win against Lincoln High School. A new track is also in the process of being constructed.

Tonight at 7 p.m. the Tigers have their first true home game on a brand new field. After last Friday’s performance at Liberty the expectations for their 2022 season are high. Tailgating in the parking lot begins at 4:30 p.m. in the parking lot with food and games. At 6:30 p.m. students can make their way to the bleachers and then finally at 7 p.m. the game begins.
