Elkins High Welcomes Tora the Therapy Dog
PAWSitivly+Life+Changing

Elkins High School recently welcomed Tora to the team. The eleven month old golden retriever is a registered therapy dog. Four teachers and staff went through training and classes to ensure safe handling and care of Tora. Communities in Schools Coordinator, Mark Rosencrance, has played a significant role in bringing Tora to the school. He is highly optimistic for change in our school created by Tora’s presence.

“I hope to strengthen the sense of family here. I hope that it‘s a positive reason for kids to come to school.” Mark Rosencrance said.

Tora visits classes and tours the halls, but is also available for one on one attention in the counseling office. Some of the benefits of her presence have already been seen.

“Identified students that are sad or are upset or having some sort of emotional crisis and she‘s been able to give them a nudge or a cuddle,” Timothy Patrick, a history teacher and one of Tora’s handlers said.

Tora means tiger in Japanese, and our new friend has definitely pounced into our hearts.

“I was able to bring her around at homecoming and that was super special,” Patrick added.

Donations for equipment and supplies for our beloved friend are being taken.
