WV Folklife Apprenticeship Program Showcase Shares Traditional Knowledge

The West Virginia Folklife Apprenticeship Program showcase will be hosted at the Phil Gainer Community Center on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023.  The event will begin with a demonstration at 3 p.m. and a presentation at 4 p.m. Fiber art, soul food, and mushroom foraging traditions will be featured at the showcase.

State Folklorist, Jennie Williams, runs the program that preserves folklife traditions. She has worked and dedicated time to recognizing the artistry and uniqueness of these traditions.

“Working with the program has helped me connect with more people and learn their stories,” said Williams.

Not only does the WV Folklife Program work to showcase tradition-bearers, but also works to spread their love for the traditions and the connections between one another. The showcase will be an educational experience and help the apprentices feel a sense of accomplishment.

“I hope the showcase helps others learn more about folklife traditions, and that they have a good time,” said Williams.
