On October 1, 2025, the United States federal government was pushed into a shutdown due to disagreements over budgets. This led to many f
ederal workers, including TSA agents and law enforcement personnel, being left without pay for 43 days, with compensation only promised upon the shutdown’s end. Another major concern of the shutdown was the defunding of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a government-assisted payment for low-income families to afford groceries.
These changes have led to a need for intervention in aiding the children of needy families in Elkins and the surrounding towns. This sparked the community to unite in providing ample nourishment to those who are unable to afford it. Many community businesses have joined together to provide a variety of food throughout the week, creating the Feed the Kids Initiative. Within this initiative, school-age children are provided meals from different businesses each day of the week.
“Since the shutdown of the government, it’s been hard to afford things,” Brooklyn Johnston said. “I think this has been a great opportunity for people to go out and be able to eat with others from the community, and it brings us together as a whole. I still feel like there needs to be more resources for food, though.“
Many people believe that resources should come from the government. They believe that despite the severity of the shutdown, they should not be allowed to leave many citizens whom they have been aiding without any assistance. Despite the terrible reality of the situation, it has shown that our community can band together to support each other in dire times.
