“Smile? You smile.” Those were the words actress Millie Bobby Brown hit back at the paparazzi during the Stranger Things season 5 premiere.
While the paparazzi do have the right to take and sell pictures of celebrities in public places, it is illegal to trespass on their private property or invade their private spaces.
Think about it, would you like to be immediately greeted by some random stranger taking a picture of you in front of your home? Probably not, I still agree that paparazzi shouldn’t follow celebrities at all, even in public.
Some celebrities want to be famous, but some just want to be rich and not have every single thing they do, say, or even wear plastered everywhere in the media for anyone to see. In our generation, we get too consumed in these “influencers’ lives” and forget about our own. We get hyper-focused and degrade every detail of their lives, which just creates a huge gossip social media scandal. I think social media is a big problem that sort of pushes this feeling that we have to care about certain celebrities ’ lives.
There could be better ways to approach the celebrity, maybe asking permission and giving them a chance to pose, rather than taking an ugly photo at a bad angle, which people shame online for absolutely no reason. Celebrities are still people; they shouldn’t have to worry about being photographed when they go out just to grab a cup of coffee or something.
Invading one’s privacy can impact the celebrity’s mental health. Imagine going out with your child or a loved one and being filmed just being yourself and trying to take care of them. An extreme example of the paparazzi harassment would be Britney Spears being filmed in a restaurant while trying to take care of and hold her child. In the clip, you can see that Britney obviously doesn’t want the attention; she’s just trying to care for her child. We can all use this great example to help us understand how frustrating the paparazzi can really be.
