The students at Elkins High school got to attend and experience different opportunities at a college fair.
On Dec. 3 counselors Erin Talbott, Jodie Akers, and Amanda Carter organized a college fair and informational sessions for students from universities, armed services, communities colleges, trade schools, and trade unions across West Virginia.
“Ms. Carter, Ms. Akers, and I came up with reasonable institutions that we could contact to be here for the day.”
I know a few students talked to organizations they normally wouldn’t have. At least one student had the opportunity to speak with an organization they’re interested in attending.” Talbott explained.
Talbott also shared that he appreciates how the event encourages conversations between students and adults about students’ futures. Carter added that there is a lot of behind-the-scenes work that people don’t see. “Sometimes the logistics make us panic more than the event itself.”
Students responded positively to the event as well. Junior Devin Hulver said, “I don’t know what I want to do yet, but my favorite part of the day was learning about the military.” Senior Sophia Mendelson shared, “I thought it was cool to see all of the colleges and the different options students could look at. My favorite seminar that I listened to was Wesleyan.” Sophia will also be attending Wesleyan College next fall.
Underclassmen also shared their thoughts. Sophomore Olivia Hedrick said, “I was most interested in Fairmont University. The fair helped me get an idea for my future.”
Samantha Phipps added, “This was a great opportunity for students to explore careers and opportunities they may have been unfamiliar with.”
The college fair ended up inspiring a wide variety of students across different grade levels and with different interests. With a diverse range of organizations available, students were able to explore meaningful options for their future.
